Image Dimensions for Social Media (2026 Cheat Sheet)

Published 2026-07-22

Recommended pixel sizes for Open Graph, Instagram, YouTube thumbnails, LinkedIn, and X. Resize images to exact dimensions without stretching.

Why exact pixels matter

Platforms crop and scale uploads aggressively. If your aspect ratio is wrong, faces get clipped and text lands outside the safe zone. Starting at the recommended width and height avoids blurry upscaling and awkward automatic crops.

Open Graph and Twitter cards share a common preview size: 1200×630 pixels (roughly 1.91:1). Many CMS plugins default to this; matching it keeps link previews sharp on Slack, Discord, and search results.

Common sizes by platform

Instagram feed square: 1080×1080. Portrait feed: 1080×1350 (4:5). Stories and Reels cover: 1080×1920 (9:16). YouTube thumbnail: 1280×720 (16:9). LinkedIn shared link preview: 1200×627. Profile avatars are often 400×400 or 800×800 depending on the network.

These numbers change slowly but not never - check each platform’s creator help center before a major campaign. The ratios matter more than exact pixels when a network accepts a range.

Safe zones and text

Keep logos and headlines away from edges. Circular avatars crop corners of square uploads. Story templates put controls at top and bottom; leave margin so buttons do not cover your CTA.

If your design tool exports at 2× resolution, divide by two for the CSS pixel size you enter in an Image Resizer. Consistency beats oversizing: a 2400×1260 file displayed at 1200×630 still works but wastes bytes unless you compress.

Resize vs crop

Resizing scales the whole image to fit target dimensions. Cropping cuts a region. Use crop when you need a different aspect ratio (turn a landscape photo into a square avatar). Use resize when the ratio already matches and you only need smaller pixels.

FindMeTool’s Image Resizer maintains aspect ratio by default so logos do not stretch. Pair with Image Cropper when you must reframe subject matter for 1:1 or 16:9 targets.

After sizing, compress

Social networks recompress uploads anyway, but starting with a reasonably sized JPEG or WebP reduces upload time and keeps quality higher after their second pass. Run Image Compressor after resizing large camera photos.

For hero images on your own site, export WebP at 1200px wide for article headers - often enough for retina laptops without shipping full-resolution originals.

Campaign checklist

Before launch, export one master creative per aspect ratio rather than letting each platform auto-crop the same landscape file. Auto-crops rarely center your subject.

Name files with dimensions in the filename (e.g. og-1200x630-product-launch.jpg) so asset folders stay searchable six months later.

Test link previews in Slack and iMessage - they cache aggressively. Update og:image URLs with a version query when you replace creative mid-campaign.

Save platform-specific exports in separate folders so designers do not accidentally upload a square story asset as a link preview.
